A healthy scalp is essential for promoting hair growth, reducing shedding, and preventing scalp conditions.
When it comes to personal care, we often focus more on skincare than hair care. But experts now say scalp health deserves just as much attention."A healthy scalp is the foundation for strong, shiny, and thick hair,” says Dr Viral Desai, board-certified cosmetic plastic & hair transplant surgeon, Medical Director – DHI India. “Just like your skin needs nourishment, your scalp needs regular care to maintain balance and support hair growth," she adds.According to Dr Desai, good scalp health helps reduce hair shedding, boosts follicle strength, and prevents common issues like dandruff, psoriasis, and eczema. “Hair loss and scalp conditions are often linked. Treating the scalp first can prevent bigger problems down the road,” he explains. Some common signs of scalp trouble include itchiness, flakiness, redness, and extreme hair loss. “If you're losing more than 100 hairs a day or notice persistent redness or discomfort, it’s time to consult a professional,” Dr Desai advises. He recommends using gentle shampoos with active ingredients like ketoconazole or zinc pyrithione, exfoliating regularly, and keeping the scalp clean and moisturised. Scalp massages can also help stimulate circulation and promote growth.“Scalp health is the new skincare,” Dr Desai concludes. “By giving your scalp the same attention you give your face, you’re investing in the long-term health of your hair.”
